There are more than 400 active Nationwide Specialty Consumer Reporting Agencies collecting, analyzing, and selling personal information and data about individual Americans. For example, the Federal Trade Commission warns that the Medical Information Bureau Inc. (MIB Inc.) is a Nationwide Specialty Consumer Reporting Agency that “collects and furnishes information on consumers to all MIB Inc. insurance company members for use in the insurance underwriting process. In addition to an individual’s credit history, data collected by MIB Inc. may include medical conditions, driving records, criminal activity, and participation in hazardous sports, among other facts.”
